Obituary

Our Dad, Wesley Peter Goossen, was born in Steinbach, Manitoba, on May 18, 1951, to Frank R. and Margaret (Friesen) Goossen. He peacefully passed away on August 18, 2017, in Fort Vermilion, Alberta, after his battle with liver disease and cancer. Dad grew up on the family farm with his two sisters and four brothers. He attended school in the Greenland, Manitoba, area. After he was finished his schooling, drywalling became his choice of work. After his best friend died from cancer, he decided to change his life and committed it to the Lord. He was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, on July 22, 1973, by Min. Ed Barkman. Life was not always easy for him and there were many ups and downs. Dads career as a drywaller allowed him to travel, moving from Manitoba to Calgary, Alberta, with his brother Berton, eventually ending up on Vancouver Island. There he met our mother, Corinne Rickman. They married on October 8, 1982, settled down, and had five wonderful children. Even though they separated, they still cared about each other. As his sons, Greg and Dwayne, got older they became his business partners and drywalled with their dad for many years. Some of our fondest memories during our childhood are when we were camping with Dad. Dad was so young at heart and always joined in any game or sport with us, creating some very special memories. Dad was a very special man and is known for his sense of humour, and witty personality. He always wanted the best for us, and wanted to buy us all homes after he one day would win the lottery. That was one of the many dreams he would always tell us about. He was very much a dreamer and always had a creative idea for anything even if we didnt agree. In 2012, Dad moved to Fort Vermilion, Alberta, to live with his oldest son, Greg. He was not always well, but he still continued working, always a perfectionist at what he did. He also enjoyed being with his sisters family and they quickly became his own. He enjoyed helping on the farm and in the field, always praising the cooks for the good meals. He loved getting together with family, and each one was special to him. The last five years, as his health slowly declined, there was a noticeable softening in his heart, and we knew he wanted to make heaven his home. As he sensed his days drawing to a close, he assured us he had made peace with the Lord and he longed to go. The night before he died, as we were gathered in his room singing To the river I am going…, he joined in, singing every word. We are so thankful God loves him even more than we do. Dad leaves behind his five children whom he loved dearly, and who will miss him very much: Helena, Calgary, Alberta; Jennifer and her fiancé, Mike Dojack, Calgary, Alberta; Gregory, Fort Vermilion, Alberta; Dwayne and Kyle, Calgary, Alberta. His sisters and brothers left to mourn: Larry and Joyce, Ste. Anne, Manitoba; Phyllis and Richard Wiebe, Steinbach, Manitoba; Joyce and Cecil Isaac, Fort Vermilion, Alberta; Delbert and Faye, Randolph, Manitoba; one sister-inlaw, Olga Goossen, Steinbach, Manitoba. Also mourning are many nieces and nephews who were special to him and who loved him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Donald and Berton.
