Obituary

Richard (Dick) Vickery was born on August 10th, 1921 in Calgary, Alberta to Ernest and Gertrude Vickery. The family headed north in 1919 to lay claim to their farm through the Soldier's Settlement Board at Huxley. Dad attended Hogadone School which was located 1.5 miles north of the Vickery farm. When he was older, he was responsible for starting the fire at the school through the winter months. He finished school in 1936 at the age of 15, when his father's hip ailments, from his time serving in WWI, made it difficult to get around. Dad became the farmer. On July 20, 1949 Dick married Betty Arkell, a widow of Herb Ewing, who happened be visiting Ewing relatives in Jan. 1949 that live across the road from the Vickery farm. Betty had a son Peter Ewing. Ernest and Gertrude moved to Calgary at this time. Over the years, Dick and Betty (Belzy) added to their family with Rick (1950), Barrie (1952) and Dale (1953). In 1960 a new house was moved from the Bob Browns place to bring the farm into the 20th century….running water and plumbing. Over the years Dad was involved with his community. He was Church Warden at the Arthurvale Church where Betty played the pump organ for 35 + years. He drove the Trochu Community Bus (started by neighbor John Moran) which took many seniors to the Calgary Stampede, Red Deer Fair, Tyrell Museum and several other locations. He was also a spare school bus driver for many years. He was a regular at the Drop in Center where he loved playing cards and visiting friends and neighbors. In September of 2010 Dick and Betty (both 89 yrs. old) moved into St. Mary's Lodge in Trochu. In 2016 he was placed on the 2nd floor for more assistance because of his dementia. He passed away in the early morning of Jan. 8th, 2019. Dick was predeceased by Betty Vickery, the love of his life, in March 2015 and step son Peter Ewing in Jan. 2010. He is survived by 3 sons, Rick (Judi), Barrie (Sandra) and Dale (Rose). 8 grandchildren Michelle, Lacey, Scott, Kurt, Trevor, Blake, Jennifer and Jaimie along with their respective families. He also leaves 16 great grandchildren, Trey, MacKenzie, Regan, Savannah, Carson, Ella, Lily, Addison, Brooke, Dylan, Gabrielle, Miah, Monroe, Hayden, Daylen and Callum. He is also survived by his sister, Beryl Gelinas of Trochu and cousin Marg Scott of Vernon as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. Dick was a proud father and farmer who taught us about the proper things in life.
