After graduating from the University of Alberta in 1940, and the College of Education in 1941, Phyllis taught school at Carstairs, AB, until she contracted rheumatic fever. After a year of recovery, she was employed at the Correspondence School Branch and also at the Meteorological Office in Edmonton. In 1947, she married Murray Steinbach, and moved to Trochu, AB. In her earlier years, Phyllis enjoyed cross-country skiing and later in her 80s, bowling kept her in good shape. She was a real sports fan and loved watching her sons play baseball with the Cardinals and hockey with the Arenas, and her daughter play volleyball, basketball and equestrian. Phyllis loved the Edmonton Oilers and #99 was her favorite, but she also liked the New Kid #97, because of his number!! On Mothers Day 1959, Phyllis and Murray bought a cabin in Sylvan Lake, and they enjoyed many summers at the lake, and the Owls Nest is still in the family.
