Obituary

Muriel Kathleen (Wells) Toews was born in the Wilkie Saskatchewan Union Hospital on March 10, 1934, to parents Etta (nee Shrigley) and Homer Wells. She peacefully passed away on November 15, 2023, at Bethany Care Centre in Airdrie.

Muriel was christened at three months old in the United Church of Wilkie, SK. Christening is a thanksgiving to God for a child's safe birth and a prayer that the child will grow in His wisdom and utilize His biblical directions. Muriel loved the Lord. She focused on her relationship with Jesus and was committed to honoring Him in the churches she attended. Muriel was compassionate, kind, loving and resilient. She received her early education and completed grades one through ten at McLurg School in Wilkie, SK. In 1950, her father was promoted to conductor on the Canadian Pacific Railway's passenger train, the Dayliner between Edmonton and Calgary. The family moved to Wetaskiwin, AB. In 1952 Muriel graduated from the Wetaskiwin Alberta High School. She was a good student and was active in the school and United Church Youth drama productions. Muriel later graduated as a registered nurse in 1956 from the Archer Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Lamont, AB. Her dedication to the health of others began in Alberta hospitals: Olds, Ponoka, Wetaskiwin, and Calgary.

Needing a corneal transplant, she travelled alone to Sarnia, Ontario, where she stayed with her Uncle Everett and his wife Helen Shrigley. They looked after Muriel and took her to London Ontario for her surgery and treatments. This was a three-month procedure in 1952.

In 1974 Muriel met Herman Toews while working at the Bow Crest Nursing Home in Bowness, AB. Muriel and Herman were married at Foothills Alliance Church in Calgary on August 14, 1976. The couple then lived in their own home in Calgary. In 1990 they moved to Bethany Care Centre in Airdrie. In 1992 the hardship of living separately was necessary. Herman Jacob Toews (son of Peter and Mary Toews) passed away March 16, 1994.

Mourning Muriel's passing are: daughters Delphine (Mervin) Strome of Calgary; Vivian Pritchard (Art Lindblad) of Mexico; Delphine's family: Alyssa (Sheldon Ridley) and 3 daughters Lilly, Zoey and Penelope of Calgary, Rachael (Scott Oberg) and son Atlas of Red Deer, Stephen of Calgary; sister-in-law Karen (Tegler) Wells of Edmonton; nieces Kathy (Wells) and Alan Robberstad of Edmonton, Carolyn (Wells) and Darcy Chinnery of Airdrie, and Sharon (Daniells) and Bill Schmeelke of Champion; nephews Reverend David and Susan (McQuinn) Wells of Burlington, Ontario, Reverend Jeff and Karyn Wells of Newport, Oregon.

Those gone before: Husband Herman Toews; Grandparents Charles and Martha Wells, and George and Irene (Everett) Shrigley. Parents Homer and Etta (Shrigley) Wells; Brothers Ralph and Ruth (Thomsen) Wells, Allan Wells, and Ronald Wells; Sisters Norma (Wells) Daniells, Kathleen and Sarah; Nephews Ronald Wells and Mark Daniels, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.

The Toews and Wells family would like to give a special heartfelt thanks to the personnel at Bethany Care Centre in Airdrie for their loving, compassionate and sympathetic care to Herman and Muriel over their decades of residency.

Blessings to the Toews family who were so dedicated to Herman and Muriel, before and after Herman's passing.

The above mentioned carried out the instructions given in Matthew 25:40 "And the King will answer and say to them: "Assuredly I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to the least of these my brethren you did it to ME. " Or Matthew 25:21 "His Lord said to him "Well done good and faithful servant."
