Obituary

Mel was born November 20, 1924 east of Trochu. He was raised on a farm near Huxley. As a young man, he played ball and later became a die-hard Blue Jays fan. At the age of 21 he set off to Toronto and worked in a radio factory. He returned to Alberta and purchased his farm from Troy Collins in 1956. Mel married Margaret Thurber in 1960. He often claimed she had proposed during this leap year. Mel was musically talented and could pick up and play any instrument. He enjoyed many years playing in bands for local dances and cabarets, often arriving home in the early morning hours. Mel loved his farm, family, friends and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was known for his humor and loved to tease. He enjoyed his annual hunting trips out west each fall. He was a diligent farmer and cared deeply for the land. In later years Mel spent a great deal of time with his grandchildren, they each held a special place in his heart. He was fortunate to be able to live on the farm with the loving care of Marg until 2018 when he moved to St Marys Healthcare Centre in Trochu. The staff in this facility provided kind and compassionate care. Mel passed away late in the day on November 19, 2019, just a few hours shy of his 95th birthday. Mel was predeceased by his parents Ed and Emma Lindeman, his brother Clarence, sister Gloria and brother in-law Jamie. He survived by his loving wife Margaret, his children Misty (Larry), Melode (Stephen), Mark (Sarah) and grandchildren Tiffany (Greg), Yvette (Brad), Payden, Nevada, Devon, Isabelle and great grandson Flynn. He is also survived by his sisters Doris and Iris (Alan) and numerous nieces and nephews. Please consider donations to St Marys Healthcare Centre Trochu.
