Obituary

Lawrence "Larry" Elmer Maerz was born in Three Hills, AB on February 4, 1938, to William and Hilda Maerz. He was the eldest child, followed by siblings Les, Howard, and Vivian. Throughout his childhood, Larry helped with dairy and crop farming on the Maerz family farmstead west of Three Hills. He traveled on foot, and by horseback, to attend a one room schoolhouse 1.5 miles down the road.

Larry moved to Medicine Hat, AB when he was 17 years old for Grade 12. After graduating, he remained in Medicine Hat to attend Hillcrest Bible College. It was here that he met his future wife, Lorraine Koch. They bonded over their mutual love of music. Larry, his brother Les, and Lorraine formed a singing group called the "Triple L Trio," ministering in churches across North America.

Larry and Lorraine were married on September 3, 1960. Larry was an evangelical church circuit pastor in Saskatchewan for 2 years before attending the University of Calgary to pursue an education degree. Larry and Lorraine raised three children - Dean, Jenell, and Kent. Larry taught High School math and science at the Trochu Valley School for 18 years, where he became legendary for allegedly throwing classroom items such as chalk brushes toward misbehaving students. He later moved to Calgary where he worked as a Christian school principal until retiring from teaching in 1994.

After retirement, Larry built a house on the edge of Three Hills overlooking the farmlands of his childhood. It was from here, well into their senior years, that Larry and Lorraine revived their music ministry, recording three gospel music albums and singing across western Canada. Larry also served for nearly a decade on the Board of Trustees for the Golden Hills School Division, and he operated a combine for many harvest seasons. In his spare time, Larry spent untold months with his children, helping them with homesteading, construction, and numerous repair projects.

Larry dedicated much of his time to prayer and scriptural study. He had a brilliant inventor's mind, creatively crafting and sculpting many amazing gadgets, some practical and some shrouded in mystery (like his fabled ice fishing rigs). He enjoyed peacefully working on projects on his farmland, but above all loved spending time with his wife, children, siblings, and granddaughters.

In his final years, Larry lost his ability to walk and speak, but he did not lose his intelligence, faith, or love for his family. He passed away with his wife by his side on December 11, 2024. He will always be remembered, missed, and loved.

Services will be held at a later date.
