Obituary

Katherine Helen Peters (nee Goerzen) was called to her heavenly home on February 16, 2026. She was born at home in the Rosebud Coulee east of Crossfield, AB, to David and Susanna Goerzen on November 5, 1933.

A dedicated outdoorswoman, Katherine told stories of playing in the Rosebud coulee as a child, and later in life, she could often be found outside gardening, hiking and skiing in the mountains. She loved travelling – with numerous trips across Canada, the USA, Europe, and eastern Asia. She also often organized trips for family or friends.

Katherine loved to learn. She completed high school at Rosthern Junior College, then pursued nursing training at Calgary General Hospital, where she graduated as valedictorian in 1955. She worked as a nurse for many years, then after her children had left home, she recertified in 1990 and continued nursing for ten years. Katherine also had many handicrafts and hobbies, taking numerous courses at Olds College over the years, ranging from upholstery to weaving.

There was always music around Katherine. She could often be found singing hymns, and she ensured that her children had music lessons. It was common in her house to walk softly in the living room so the record player wouldn’t skip.

One of the cornerstones of Katherine’s life was her strong faith in God. She demonstrated her faith by sewing for MCC, serving on multiple committees, and supporting humanitarian services worldwide. Her children remember that devotions were a priority during the morning rush. Her faith set an example for her children and grandchildren throughout her life.

Katherine married Edward William Peters on July 22, 1956, and the two moved to the Peters family farm east of Didsbury, where they farmed and raised four children. After Ed’s death, Katherine moved into a condo in Olds for seven years, which she greatly enjoyed. For the last years of her life, she lived in Sunset Manor in Innisfail. We wish to thank the staff there for their kindness and care of Katherine in the last years of her life.

Katherine was predeceased by her parents, her siblings David (Margaret) Goerzen, Susanna (Frank) Neufeld, Mary Goerzen, Henry (Erna) Goerzen, Margaret (Peter) Isaak, Martin (MaryAnn) Goerzen, Ernie Goerzen and her husband Ed Peters.

She is survived by her siblings Elsie Sawatzky, Leonhard (Marilyn) Goerzen and sister-in law, Ruth Scott; her children Delores Peters (Phil McKinnon), Douglas Peters, Diane Peters and Bruce (Chris) Peters; her grandchildren Daniel McKinnon, Morgan McKinnon (Jon Robinson), Carolyn McKinnon, Joel Peters, Danielle (Mat) Toth, Selena (John) Doherty, Twila (Mat) Fillion, Tanis Harder, Reg (Lexi) Klippenstein, Colin Klippenstein (Katlin Friesen), Joshua Peters (Heather MacKay), Ross Peters; her fifteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral Services will be held at Bergthal Mennonite Church on Monday, February 23, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow.
