Obituary

James Leslie Waugh, known to all who loved him as Les, passed peacefully into the Lord's presence on September 19, 2025.

Les was born on June 15, 1941, in Langley, BC, to James and Doris Waugh. He grew up in Langley alongside his siblings, Bob (Elsie), Betty (Austin), and Rick (Elaine), and was passionately involved in boxing as a youth. Les attended Langley High School, where he met and fell in love with Caroline Arno, whom he later married, beginning a lifelong journey together.

As their young family grew to include David (Lori), Doug (Ruth), and Bill (Debbie), Les moved on from Langley, where he had barbered alongside his father Jim, to Kamloops, BC, where he continued his career with his friend Tyrone.

From Kamloops, the family moved to Cache Creek, where Les enjoyed hosting many gatherings around the swimming pool, as well as hunting and fishing, before moving to Victoria. In Victoria, while continuing to barber, Les also found time to operate a small corner store market and a laundromat with his wife, Carol.

The travel bug struck again, and Les moved from Victoria—where he had barbered alongside his son Dave—to the Cariboo. There, he became known for his love of cooking for large gatherings at the church at the 108 Mile Ranch. Later, in Williams Lake, Les continued barbering and also opened a fried chicken franchise and a boutique candy store.

Several moves eventually led Les and Carol to the Shuswap region on Mara Lake, where he enjoyed working with stained glass and began his retirement. Moves to Enderby and Kelowna followed, before ultimately settling in Three Hills, Alberta, where he lived until his final months at West View Care Community in Linden, Alberta.

Les passed peacefully, surrounded by family and his wife of 64 years, Carol. He will be deeply missed by his many nieces, nephews, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
