Berry, James Joseph Born in St. Boniface MB 25 February 1952. Jim passed away peacefully at Three Hills AB on 10 August 2016 at the age of 64 with his loving wife Shelley by his side. Jim and his family lived in Transcona and St. Vital MB. until May of 1965. At that time they moved to Linden Alberta. Jim attended Dr. Elliot School in Linden and graduated from Three Hills High School in 1970. He attended SAIT in Calgary and obtained a diploma in Survey Technology in 1973. He worked for Midwest Surveys in Calgary and was registered as an Alberta Land Surveyor in June of 1978. He worked for Midwest until 1980, and then for other companies until 1993 when he rejoined Midwest. Because Jim enjoyed working outside so much he spent 20 years in the field, uncommon in this line of work, before moving into the office until his retirement in 2008. He was a hard working, dedicated man who set a high standard for himself and his work. Jim was a teacher and mentor to the people he worked with and was compelled by his thoughful and considerate nature to help others wherever he could. He was highly respected by his peers. Jim was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying many different forms of adventures, including canoeing, snowshoeing, hiking, camping, snowmobiling and quadding. Jim's love and command of the outdoors was appreciated by many and he was pleased to share his knowledge and time with others making many wonderful memories.
When he was not appreciating the outdoors, Jim could usually be found with his nose buried deep in a book. Jim had a passion for history and had a remarkable ability to remember details that he would share with others.
Retirement freed Jim up to be in his long time home, a treasured sanctuary where he spent many satisfying hours woodworking, and repairing old tractors, vehicles, and bicycles which he selflessly and freely passed on to others.
He had one of the most generous spirts of anyone you will ever meet. In 2010 he met the love of his life, Shelley Jackson. The two of them had many great adventures together but particularily delighted in the magic of ordinary days together. They were married in July of 2015.
For the last two years of his life Jim fought cancer bravely and without complaints. He was a quiet, gentle, kind and considerate man who will be missed by many. Jim left his mark on many places in our fine province through his distinquished surveying and most significantly, in the hearts of many as well.
