Our beloved husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa, Harold Edward Howe, of Swalwell, Alberta, passed away peacefully in his sleep, October 10, 2015 at the age of 92 years. His family was by his side. Harold was the first born child of William (Bill) and Gladys Howe on August 11, 1923. He grew up on the family farm that his father had homesteaded in 1911. Harold took his early schooling in Fertile Valley School, then rode horseback to school in Swalwell. Harold graduated from Olds College in 1943. He gradually took over the family farm and in 1946 purchased his first purebred Red Poll cattle. His herd became known as "Rodeo Red Poll." Harold married Almira Grace MacGregor from Stettler, AB on April 17, 1957. He welcomed two daughters, Marguerite (1958) and Florence (1964). Harold stayed on the farm after Grace's passing in 1999. On January 29, 2005, Harold married Dorothy Anna (Vincent) Walker of Ottawa, ON and they continued to live on the farm until the fall of 2013. Over the years, Harold was an active member of the Canadian and Alberta Red Poll Cattle Associations, Alberta Weather Modification Co-op, Alberta Agricultural Service Board, Three Hills Rural Community group and Kneehill museum. Harold spent countless hours volunteering on the "As the years go by..." history books. Harold was always proud of his Red Poll cattle, raising them until he was 91 years of age. A highlight for Harold was in 1986 when his cattle won several classes at the Calgary Stampede. Harold had a fond love of nature that he shared many times with his grandchildren. This love included baby pigs, crocuses, beaver dams, blue herons and meadowlarks to name a few. Harold enjoyed traveling to international Red Poll conferences in England, Australia, New Zealand and Jamaica and helped host the Canada/USA conference in 1982. Harold was predeceased by his parents, William (Bill) and Gladys Howe; first wife, Grace Howe; sisters Ellen Schmaltz and Marjorie Leonard; brothers in law Gordon Paget and Keith Leonard. Harold is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; daughters, Marguerite (Marshall) Sellick of Calgary, AB and Florence (Mark) Brandon of Lethbridge, AB; five grandchildren, Phoenix (Mike) Lyon, Amber (Michael) Brown, Harland, Donavon and Lane Brandon; five great grandchildren, Connor and Quinn Lyon, Melissa, Lexington, and Zachary Brown; sister Margaret Paget and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Harold is also survived by Dorothy's family, Linda (Wayne-deceased) Henderson and family, Jamie (Lin) Walker and family, Ron (Alex) Walker and family, Jill (Dan) Bell and family, and Judy Walker (Mark Scott) and family and Dorothy's extended family. Harold will be fondly remembered as a loving family man, farmer and stockman. Funeral services were held October 16 , 2015 at Knox United Church, Three Hills, AB with interment in Swalwell Cemetery.
