Obituary

Trudy Martens, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on December 11, 2024, with her family by her side. She was born on May 23, 1959, in Eriksdale, Manitoba, to Ben and Susan Dyck, who preceded her in death.

On August 22, 1976, Trudy married Jake Martens, and together they built a life centered on faith, love, and family. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Jake, and their children: Jimmy; Larry (Anna) with their children, Madison, Austen, and Natalee; Karen (Ed Wiebe) with their children, Kiana, Sophia, and Slater; Diane (Wayne Driedger) with their children, Mia, Zoe, Connor, and Winston; and Kevin (Genevieve). Trudy is also survived by her siblings, Dave (Martha), John (Wanda), Lisa, Olga (Merv), and Corny (Kayla), along with many loved nieces and nephews.

Trudy had many hobbies that brought her joy, including sewing, quilting, and embroidery and loved sending the quilts and clothing she made to charitable organizations. Trudy was very tender-hearted, always going the extra mile. Mom had a strong faith in God, loving her husband and family. She was always praying for her children and grandchildren and sending Scripture verses to inspire them.

She loved flowers, riding bike with the grandkids, shopping, and going on long walks with her girls. Several times Jake and Trudy took their bikes to the mountain parks to ride the trails, and she loved the thrill of boating as well. They loved going on road trips, some of their last trips included going to the Grand Canyon and Vancouver Island. She liked to play table games as well as yard games like croquet. Trudy was a great organizer, and it didn't take her long to get some activity set up.

In 2021 she was diagnosed with Corticobasal Syndrome which was later identified as Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a similar brain disease. Trudy suffered very much with this disease which slowly took away her speech, walking, balance, swallowing , and eventually her life. She bore it all patiently, always trusting in God for grace to see her through. She had the privilege of staying at home throughout her illness, never needing hospital care. Her husband, children, and sister Lisa lovingly cared for her with support from an amazing palliative care team. Trudy's nurses were amazing, including Sandra, her special caregiver.

The last weeks of Trudy's life were very difficult for her. Jake was always beside her, comforting, holding her hand, playing music videos that she loved, praying, and reading messages from friends. During the last week, the family and Lisa were always around her bed day and night. On the late evening of December 11, Jake was sitting by Trudy's bedside, playing her favourite music, and holding her hand. Trudy's breathing slowed down, and she peacefully slipped into eternity.
