IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Garland "Gary" Murray
Sutherland
July 20, 1950 – February 28, 2025
We are saddened to announce the passing of Garland "Gary" Sutherland, beloved son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, on February 28 2025, at age 74. Born July 20 1950, in Bancroft Ontario, Gary was the youngest of seven children. At age 17 he set out from home, working in Northern Ontario for a spell before travelling West. Finding himself in Vancouver he visited a CAF recruitment office. It was February 1970, and the start of a 26 year military career. He served with pride in the Canadian Infantry and Air Force, including two tours in Germany, peacekeeping in the Golan Heights, and postings at several bases in Canada. He was proud of his service, made many lifelong friends, and enjoyed the travel and challenges of his career.
After serving with distinction, Gary retired from military life and moved with his family to Alberta. He ran his own mobile welding business for 12 years until health issues forced him to sell.
Many memories were made and shared with his wife of 49 years, Linda, and he was a proud father to his son, Derek and daughter Denise. His grandchildren were especially dear to him, watching them grow up was one of his true joys. Throughout his life Gary's love of the outdoors provided many a camping and travel adventure. He loved to golf, hunt, fish, and ride, and was always up for sports and socializing. He had a full and interesting life, shared with family, friends and always; pets. Burdened with health issues in recent years, he stubbornly adapted as much as possible to continue doing the things he loved.
Those who knew Gary will remember him as a leader, a loyal friend, a man with strong convictions who could be fun loving and good humoured. He will be always remembered and missed by those he leaves behind, including his wife Linda, son Derek Sutherland, daughter Denise (Daniel) Bedard, sisters Wava Brown and Dorothy (Bruce) Kelly, brother Donald Sutherland, grandchildren William and Lily Sutherland, Blayne and Daylin Bedard, as well as sisters-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and three brothers.
Our heartfelt Thanks to the wonderful Doctors, nurses and staff that cared for Gary during his illness, including those at the Olds, Red Deer, and Peter Lougheed hospitals.
A Celebration of Life will be held June 14th, 2025, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the Olds Royal Canadian Legion.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
