Obituary

FRED WEISENBURGER March 19, 1919 - September 4, 2016 Fred passed away peacefully September 4, 2016 at the age of 97 at Bethany Collegeside, Red Deer with his wife and soul mate Ruth and son Earle by his side. Born at Youngstown, AB to Daniel and Elizabeth Weisenburger, he was the 2nd youngest in a family of seven: Adam, Otto, Emil, Eli, Alma, Fred and Irene. In 1923, at the tender age of four, Fred experienced the true covered-wagon experience. Full of pioneer spirit, the Weisenburger family moved from Youngstown to the Curlew district, 15 miles west of Trochu. A trip taking ten days with Fred on horseback the whole way, helping to herd the animals. They made up their own wagon train with wagons loaded to overflowing, transporting all their worldly possessions plus their cows, horses and farming machinery to a new home and a new life. In 1924 they moved to the Huxley area and again in 1937 west of Delburne. In 1942 Fred left this farm home to join the Canadian Army. After special training he served as a War Gas Instructor. He was proud of the fact that before discharge he gained the status of Sergeant and drove in the Calgary Stampede chuck wagon races in 1942 and 43. Also during his time of military service he married Hazel Petersen. They were married for 40 years. After discharge, Fred, Hazel and Earle made their farm home near Huxley.
