Obituary

Florence Eileen Price passed away peacefully at the Dulcina Hospice Saturday morning January 30th, 2016 after a recent challenge with cancer. Born July 23, 1928 at Crossfield on her parent's homestead, she grew up during some very hard years. She learned from her father Francis Landymore the love of animals, especially horses, and from her mother Ellen (McIntyre), the love of learning and teaching. She had an older brother Walter (predeceased) and has a younger sister Beth (Smith). Beth recalls being told at the age of 5 that Flo was going to help her learn to read because when she (Florence) grew up, she was going to be a teacher. Florence went by horseback to the local country school and then to high school in Crossfield, where she graduated at the age of 16 while earning the Governor General's award for her marks. After taking "Normal School" she indeed became a teacher in a one room school near Nier, Alberta, a day's walk from home. There she cared for students' horses and split wood in the winter, heating the school in time to thaw the ink wells so the students could do their work. Some of the farm boys she taught were older and bigger than she was, but she was able to help them learn and to be prepared for their future. Many of those students became lifelong friends, appreciating the support and the education they received in that small, multi-grade school. Florence was courted by and married Stanley Price, and she quickly helped with the purebred Hereford operation his father and family had west of Crossfield. In 1950 Stan and Flo purchased some land of their own northwest of Acme and began their own cattle and grain operation after returning to Crossfield for a couple of years to help after Stan's father suddenly died. Florence was actively involved in the operation outdoors, in the yard with her own vegetable garden, and in keeping the books. She also was kept busy raising their growing family. Years passed before there was running water in the house and much longer before the central coal furnace and wood stove were replaced. Challenges were met and dealt with by looking at new opportunities and soon the family operation grew to include a second farm location where much later a new house was built. There, true to Florence's approach to life, a granny suite was included where Florence's mother was able to stay and enjoy the many different family members and friends who became active in the mixed farming operations. All the while the business was growing to reach beyond the local community, eventually to international business connections. Florence was involved in the recording, accounting, performance records and utilizing her creative and artistic ability to generate brochures and newsletters on her trusty Mac computers. Beyond this though she made a tremendous contribution to the character of the organization at all levels with her caring, supportive approach with people and keen interest in everyone. This legacy certainly lives on with everyone she touched. In addition to being a major part of family and business awards over the years, she was recognized individually as the Acme Volunteer of the Year, a Woman of Vision by Global Television, and one of the Country Guide's 12 Most Influential Farmers In Canada. Florence was also passionate about supporting people and families in the community. She was active through the church teaching Sunday school, was a part of the United Church Women, led youth groups and started communities events such as card parties and "guess who's coming to dinner" to help get people to know each other better. She often sought out those who needed a little help. She always was a champion of education, both at the school and with individuals. She was a founding member of ACES, (Acme Cultural Education Society), a small group dedicated to supporting the school. She produced the ACES monthly community calendar that was placed on home refrigerators for decades. She was one of the leaders to get a music band going with the school involving many students for a number of years. She enjoyed sketching and painting as well as writing history, short stories and poems. Her love of learning and helping people enjoy art and music lives on with all who benefited. She was a loving and supportive daughter, sister, wife and partner, and an encouraging and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a friend and mentor to all who needed or wanted this. Florence is survived by her sister Beth Smith, (Charlie) nieces Karen and Julie, nephew Pat (Sandra) Landymore and Katie (Dave Strohm) and family. She also is survived by her own family of six sons and one daughter, twenty-eight grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren: Son David (Isabelle) grandson Matthew (Cathy) great-grandchildren Jason, Tyler, Ann and Jane, granddaughters Teri and Joanna and grandson Chad (Jaclyn) Son Arthur (Debra) granddaughter Kristin, granddaughter Lindsay (David) great-granddaughter Sydney, great-grandson Hudson, grandson Robert Son Allan (Ginny) grandson Scott (Alejandra) great-grandson Rafael, granddaughters, Torey, Josie (Marcus), Allie Son Douglas (Helga) grandson Joel (Amanda) great-granddaughters Madison, Brooklyn, granddaughter Kim (Dan) great-granddaughters Holly, Neve, granddaughter Robin (Jerome) great-granddaughters Natalie, Lillian, granddaughter Kendra (Brian) granddaughter Tonay (Evan) great-granddaughter Chesney, and great-grandson Hayden Son Ray (Peggy) granddaughter Carla (Trevor) great-grandson Emmett, great-granddaughter Blythe, granddaughter Janelle (Misha) great-grandson Ryder, plus one very soon, granddaughter Nicole (Boyd), granddaughter Michelle, great-granddaughter Taylor, granddaughter Leanne Daughter Joyce (Bruce Lord) grandsons Garth, Paul, Roscoe, Kenneth Son Glen (Annelies) granddaughter Julia, grandson Travis, granddaughter Emma.
