Obituary

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Erma Klassen. Erma passed away peacefully on October 23, 2022, at the age of 95 years, with her husband and family by her side. Erma was born to CC and Anna Toews on March 25, 1927 in Swalwell, Alberta. She was the third of nine children. She went to school in the one-room Antler School, using a covered wagon and two horses to take her and her siblings the three miles from home to school each day. Erma continued her education in Winnipeg taking a nursing aide course. After seven months of training, she became ill with skin tuberculosis and was forced to move home. She spent six months in bed, but the Lord completely healed her. On October 18, 1947 she married Jake Klassen from Sunnyslope. Their first home was a 10x12 one-room house with no plumbing, the CC Toews shack. In 1948, they moved to the farm west of Sunnyslope and started their family. Their marriage was blessed with six children, Janet, Rosalie, Paul, Karen, James and Donna. In 1987, Jake and Erma retired and moved into Linden. After a fall in 2019, Erma was placed in long-term care where she resided until her passing. Erma was a hard worker, faithfully taking care of the farm and her family. She was an amazing hostess to all who visited. Erma was active in community and church, teaching Sunday School, quilting and serving wherever needed. Erma was a prayer warrior for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She leaves her family and friends with a faith filled legacy. Erma will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 75 years, Jake; brothers, Wes, Allen and Jerry; her children, Janet (John) Toews, Rosalie McCulloch, Paul (Dana) Klassen, Karen (Trevor) Hannah, James (Janice) Klassen and Donna (Darin) Esau; 42 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Erma was predeceased by her parents, CC and Anna Toews; siblings, Henry, Fred, Ruth, Gladys and Eleanor; grandchildren, Carol and Craig; son-in-law, Miles; and great-grandchild, Riley. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the Westview Care staff. Memorial donations may be made to Westview Care Community.
