IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Derek Troy
Barkman
October 1, 1976 – July 18, 2025
Derek Troy Barkman, a man of boundless adventure and passionate spirit, left this world too soon following a motorcycle accident on July 18th, 2025, at Swansea Point, BC. Born on October 1st, 1976, in Spirit River, AB, Derek's drive for life and his loving nature touched all who knew him.
Derek, known for his hearty laugh and wide smile, was a devoted son to his mother, Yvonne Barkman, and was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Barkman, and his beloved wife, Pauline Ruth Barkman "Woods" whom he married on June 22nd, 1997. A cherished brother to Kevin Barkman, and an inspirational father to his three sons, Colton James, Spencer Ray, and Dexter Stewart Barkman, Derek's legacy of love and adventure lives on through them. His son Spencer's fiancée, Samantha Jane Seafoot, also held a special place in his heart.
Though Derek left school in the eighth grade, he led a path of diverse experiences and adventures. At 18, he began a career in long-haul trucking, traversing the vast landscapes of Canada and 41 states of the USA. His work was more than a job; it was his passion, hauling everything from cattle, produce, logging, and equipment. Derek's love for farming was no secret, often seen combining for friends during the harvest season. In another life, he would have been a farmer, living fully in tune with the land he so adored.
Derek's interests painted the picture of a man who embraced the great outdoors with open arms. A motorcycle enthusiast, he cherished the freedom of the open road, especially when riding his Harley Davidson through the mountains. Derek's connection to nature extended to serene boat rides on the lake, snowmobiling through snowy peaks, and conquering trails like the formidable west coast trail on foot. An avid sports fan, he found joy in the thrill of hockey and baseball, rooting for the Calgary Flames and the Toronto Blue Jays, with Jarome Iginla holding a special place as his favorite hockey player. Derek often enjoyed relaxing while listening to his favourite musicians, among them Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.
Described as loving, adventurous, compelling, spirited, friendly, and passionate, Derek lived a life that many aspire. His motto was "Live to ride, ride to live."
Derek's journey through life was a testament to the power of love, the thrill of exploration, and the depth of passion. His absence leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but his spirit will forever be a guiding light, encouraging us all to live life to the fullest. Derek Troy Barkman will be deeply missed, but his stories, his laughter, and his love will resonate for generations.
