David Grant Asbel Hastie was born on November 18, 1926 in Korrobert, Saskatchewan to David and Margaret Hastie.
He was raised on the farm with his older brother Cameron and sister Janet. As the younger son many of his chores included helping his mother with duties around the house.
A strong willed woman, his mother was a trained teacher. She taught at various First Nation and Christian schools throughout her career and retired from her calling at the age of 70.
Grant's family moved to Saskatoon after he had graduated from high school. He attended the University of Saskatoon and obtained a teaching degree. While teaching in the Saskatoon area he met some friends and began attending the Alliance Church. During this time, he was saved and friends convinced him to give the Bible College in Regina a shot, even if only for one year.
This turned out to be a good choice for two reasons both of which would change the course of his life forever. During his time in Regina he met the love of his life Beverly Ann Rae and they would spend the next 65 years as man and wife. It was also in Regina that God called Grant to the ministry. Grant and Bev were married on December 29th, 1951 and Grant devoted the rest of his life to these two things; his wife and family and his ministry as a pastor.
His first church was located in the Turtle Mountains of Manitoba and because he was Hastie they soon had a start on their family. Doug came along on November 26, 1952, David followed on November 29th, 1954 and Darlice arrived on November 17th, 1957 (I guess they were Valentine babies). Deanie followed a bit later, coming along on July 16, 1962.
While the kids kept coming Grant was busy with his pastoral responsibilities as well and he ministered with the following congregations;
1. Turtle Mountain, Manitoba 2. Grande Prairie, Alberta 3. Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan 4. Barrhead, Alberta 5. Abbotsford, British Columbia 6. Wimborne, Alberta 7. Lamont, Alberta 8. Mirror, Alberta 9. Irma, Alberta
In addition, Grant and Bev spent a year in Japan working for JAL as missionaries and house parents to missionary children from around the world. Grant worked as a missionary with To Russia with Love delivering bibles into the former Soviet Union. The two of them also spent time in Hawaii on several occasions with Youth for Christ working as volunteers in the building of the Christian University.
Grant had a heart for children and all through his years of ministry he and Bev committed to work with various camps and were instrumental in helping set up Camp Nakaman. As well, there were all the various youth groups, Boys Brigades and Pioneer Girls clubs.
Grant took a keen interest in the things happening in the communities he served in. At one-point he was elected Mayor in the town of Mirror. While there he helped shepherd through the development of a sports facility. In places like Abbotsford he started a ministerial that encompassed many of the evangelical churches in the area and through which they ran regular revival meetings.
Grant and Bev joined Harvest Hills Alliance church when they retired and were responsible for starting up the Seniors group and the library. Because old preachers never retire they are just put out to Pastor, when the need arose, Grant stepped up a couple of times to fill in as interim pastor at Harvest Hills until a new pastor was found.
Of course it wasnt all work. Grant enjoyed curling and participated on the Calgary Christian Curling team as part of the Friars Brier. Curling very quickly became one of his favorite pastimes. Other hobbies included coin collecting, playing his saxophone and games, he always enjoyed playing games.
During the summers Grant and Bev helped run the camp ground at TL Bar Ranch. During their stay at the ranch they made many lifelong friends with the campers who came there.
Grant never forgot his calling and certainly there was more than one person at the camp ground who came to know God through his example, influence and love. He was that man who could be counted on, who was a steady influence and an example that his whole family looked up to and was proud of.
Toward the end his mind and body failed him but his spirit and faith in God would often shine through in the most unexpected ways. It was this faith that culminated in his ultimate victory on the morning of May 3rd, 2017. Well done good and faithful servant.
