Obituary

In loving memory of Bernice, my Wife, our Mom, Grama, and Gramama Bernice Ella Reimer was born to Aaron F. and Catherine Bartel Reimer on July 27, 1927 in Giroux, Manitoba. When she was 9, they moved to Crooked Creek, Alberta. Mom told us many interesting stories of homesteading days. Times were often hard, but we heard about the good memories. Seven years later, they moved to a dairy farm at Linden, Alberta. Starting at a young age, Mom enjoyed a variety of jobs to help her family make a living. She spoke fondly of summers spent picking and canning fruit in BC and a lot of her homemaking inspirations came from helping out at her cousins after a new baby. She loved her years at the Bank of Montreal until she began her nurses training. In 1960, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Calgary General Hospital and was a nurse at heart for the rest of her life. Jac, the love of her life, asked her to be his wife, and our parents were married on December 16, 1960. The love they shared for over 60 years set an incredible example for the rest of us. Being a small family had many advantages, and, because Mom and Dad loved travelling, we enjoyed many trips together. In the summer of 87, Moms boys joined the family. There were no in-laws only sons, and as our families grew, each new grandchild only made Grama happier. We as grandchildren have many happy memories spent with Grama. Mom enjoyed working. Her clean house and large garden were a testimony to this. She was also an incredible cook, and many good memories were made around her dinner table with family and friends. She happily helped Dad on the farm when he needed her. Mom was converted at the young age of 12 and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite. She lived her faith, setting an example to anyone who knew her. The Parkinsons diagnosis over 30 years ago was daunting, but she faced it with strength. It was her faith and long-standing trust in God that carried her through. She remained cheerful and never complained, a true inspiration. She peacefully left us in the morning hours of March 22, 2021 at the age of 93. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and she was surrounded by her family when the angels came to take her. Mom and Dad have spent the last 10 years at the Westview Care Community, and we would like to sincerely thank all of the staff for making this truly a home for them. May God bless each one for the love they showed. She is dearly missed by her loving husband, Jac, her children: Bev and Jason Cottier and Cheryl and Steve Berniko, and her grand- and great-grandchildren: Rynelle and Dalen Ratzlaff, Colby and Kaden, Chris Cottier and Katie Kramer, Ashley Cottier, Kayleen and Bob Schartner, Sienna and Elliott, Jenni and Brennan Isaac, Andrea Berniko, and Kyle Berniko. Her brothers and sisters – Anne Baerg, Tom Courtney, Susanna Reimer, Doreen Reimer, Howard and Edith Reimer, Ralph and Jeri Reimer, Gilbert and Marilyn Reimer. Dads family – Edward Reimer, Jean Reimer, Gladys and Lloyd Penner. Preceding her in death are her parents, Dads parents, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, 5 brothers-in-law, and 3 sisters-in-law.
