It is with thoughtful love that the family of Alfred John Withey announces his quiet passing on June 10, 2017 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 82 years. Alfred, known as Al, was born in Ottawa, Ontario, the second of six sons of Emrel John Withey and Grace Olivia Johnson. He came to western Canada after joining the Canadian Armed Forces at age 17 as part of the Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry where he received training as a paratrooper. During this time, he came to know Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour and met his adoring wife Jeanette May MacKenzie, to whom he was married for almost 60 years. After discharge from the military, Al ran a bread delivery business and was one of the last door-to-door bread salesmen in Calgary. While on his route, his enthusiasm for his Lord was displayed by his singing and guitar playing with the many that he met. He often stopped along his delivery route to hold a song service during the day. After selling his delivery business, he began working as a real estate agent, eventually forming Withey Realty Ltd. where he worked until his retirement. Al was known for holding services in street meetings on 7th Avenue in Calgary and in town at Morley, Alberta, playing guitar or harmonica, singing and even yodeling during these services. Al and Jeanette have 10 children living in western Canada, Texas and South Africa: Carol (Joe) Schellenberg, Michael Withey, Daniel Withey, Evangeline (Jesse) Stevens, Philip (Elizabeth) Withey, Paul (Jennifer) Withey, Mark (Becca) Withey, Alan (Cheryl) Withey, Sam (Maria) Withey and Leanne (Roland) Gosse; 21 grandchildren: James (Kayla) Stevens, Alana Stevens, Shanna Stevens, Seth Stevens, Amanda Withey, Rodney Withey, Justin Withey, Joseph Withey, Adison Withey, Lily Withey, Hunter Withey, Torin Withey, MacKenzie Withey, Julianna Withey, Jackson Withey, Nolan Withey, Dustin Withey, Ariana Withey, Jordan Withey, Andrew Gosse, and Cassia Gosse; and 2 great-grandchildren: Darrellyn Stevens and Zekiel Stevens. Al was predeceased by his parents, three of his brothers: Guy (2004), Clifford (1994) and Mervin (2015) and his granddaughter Amanda Withey (2016). He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, his brothers George and Don, all 10 children, 20 grandchildren and both great-grandchildren. His family was one of the great joys of his life. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the Home Care Palliative Team and the Foothills Hospital Palliative Care Unit for the wonderful care and attention they showed to Al these past few weeks.
