Alfred 'Fred' Jacob
Esau
Nov 18, 1943 — Aug 23, 2026
Calgary, Alberta
Fred Esau passed away peacefully on August 23, 2026, at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of faith, hard work, laughter, and a family who loved him dearly.
Fred was born on November 18, 1943, in Swalwell, Alberta, to Jacob and Mary Esau. As anyone who knew him would attest, he inherited the quick wit and sharp sense of humor the Esau family is known for. Whether through a well-timed joke, a playful tease, or a clever one-liner, Fred had a way of bringing laughter into everyday moments and making people feel at ease.
A devoted member of The Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Fred's faith was a guiding force throughout his life. At the age of 17, he accepted Christ as his Saviour and was baptized into the Church. From then on, he sought to serve God faithfully and quietly, demonstrating Christian values through his actions, his relationships, and his unwavering commitment to his family.
On October 4, 1963, he married the love of his life, Bernice Ruth Boese. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Terry, Eldonna, and Jodi. Fred was a devoted husband and father who worked tirelessly to provide for his family and took great pride in seeing his children establish families of their own.
Never one to stay in one place for long, Fred moved more than most people could keep track of. Over the years he called many communities home, including Linden, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Airdrie. Wherever he lived, he formed lasting friendships and became known as a dependable member of the community. One of Fred's proudest accomplishments was building the family's house along the creek with his son, Terry and Nephew, Kelly. The home stood as a testament to Fred's strong work ethic, practical skills, and determination to create something lasting for his family.
Fred believed in the value of honest work and spent his life putting that belief into practice. Over the years, he held a wide variety of roles, driving truck, operating a commercial egg farm, working at Walbern's, and providing custom baling services throughout the community. His strong work ethic, practical wisdom, and ability to connect with people eventually led him into successful careers in sales and finance. He worked in finance at Hygrade Hatchery and later managed a team of sales representatives at Agri-Centre. Following his move to British Columbia, he continued working in finance. Whatever the position, Fred took pride in doing his work well and providing for those he loved, earning the respect of coworkers, customers, and friends alike.
While hard work was important to Fred, so too was spending time with the people he loved. He cherished camping trips with family and close friends, creating lasting memories around campfires, on fishing boats, and at countless campsites over the years. Family adventures brought him some of his greatest joy, from a memorable move to Australia with Bernice, Terry, Eldonna, and baby Jodi to help his brother-in-law Ray on the farm, to an unforgettable journey to Alaska with Hank’s, towing their trailers through some of the most breathtaking scenery. In his final years, Koocanusa held a special place in his heart. His last trip there with Terry's family was filled with laughter, treasured moments, and a memorable boat ride that brought joy to everyone who shared it with him.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 62 years, Bernice; his son, Terry (Jean); his daughter, Jodi (Nolan); and his son-in-law (Bill and his wife Penny). His grandchildren, Krista (Brad), Kendell (Mollie), Kayo (Lauren), Kajsa (Lyle), and Spencer (Olivia); and by his three treasured great-grandchildren, Connell, Charlotte, and Maeve.
Fred is also survived by his sisters, Norma and Deanna; his sisters-in-law, Wilma, Alice, Joann, and Marlyne; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Mary Esau; his brothers, Harvey, Harold, Allen, Lewis, Elmer, and Don; his sisters, Laura, Edna, and Marilyn; his beloved daughter, Eldonna; his grandson, Kyle; and his granddaughter, Tianna.
Those who knew Fred will remember his quick wit, steadfast faith, and genuine kindness. He enjoyed good conversation, loved to make people laugh, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Through every season of life, he remained devoted to God, committed to his family, and grateful for the people around him.
Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the example he set will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Memorial Services will be held at Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Linden, AB, Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. Reception Supper to follow at Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Linden.
