Agnes Baerg Toews was born to Peter and Eva Schartner Baerg on February 10, 1919 at Swalwell, Alberta. She passed away on July 20, 2021 at the age of 102 ½ years, at Westview Care Community, Linden, AB with her children and grandchildren by her side. Mom lost her dad when she was 9 years old. Two years later, her mother married Abraham Duerksen. Mom received her education at Antler School. She was converted and baptized at the age of 19, together with approximately 60 other converts. Her Christian life was important to her. She remained faithful until the end. On August 19, 1940 Mom was married to Paul Toews. In their earlier years, they spent several winters sawmilling in the foothills, with their young family. Mom had a mothers heart which spread to taking care of children who temporarily needed looking after. In 1963, they sold their dairy farm, and moved to northern Alberta to help pioneer the Heart Valley congregation. Mom had many opportunities to use her hospitality there. In 1984, they spent 2 ½ years at Fort Vermillion, AB, overseeing the new seniors home. It was their pleasure to help and deal with the local First Nations people and community and to leave a trail of good memories. The next 10 years were spent in retirement in Heart Valley. The year 1997 brought a move back to Linden, their childhood community. They resided there until their passing. Dad passed away in 2010. Mom loved her flowers and in her older years, it was a joy to her to tend them and watch them grow! She was known for her green thumb. She also had an artistic side to her, making her home cozy and inviting. Mom continued to have her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren around her and took interest in all of them. They all wanted to stop in and see Granny. She was privileged to be taken out for supper until near her end. Her cheerfulness was enjoyed by all. She was a source of practical encouragement to anyone who shared their trials of life, including child training. She kept herself busy by reading and sewing many little girls dresses. She enjoyed visiting with others. The family is thankful for the care given Mom at Westview Care Community. Those left with precious memories are her children: daughter-in-law Audrey Toews, Pincher Creek, AB, Lorna and Eldon Toews, Linden, AB; Carolyn Klassen, Abbotsford, BC.; Gilbert and Phyllis Toews, Heart Valley, AB; Verel Toews, Linden, AB; and Doreen Toews, Edmonton, AB; Burton and Susan Toews, Linden, AB; Darcy and Shirley Toews, Abbotsford, BC; Monica and Rob Wohlgemuth, Crooked Creek, AB; Wanda and Roland Thiessen, Linden, AB; 43 grandchildren 122 great grandchildren and 11 great, great grandchildren, sister-in-law Ann Baerg, brother in law Walt Regehr, brother Dave and Dorothy Duerksen. Those gone before her were her parents, her husband, one son, one son in law, one grandson, three brothers and three sisters.
